Competitive pay for quality content.

The basic premise of Contently pricing is that our freelancers are skilled professionals who deserve to be compensated for the hours they put into every project.

When calculating the prices that follow, we’ve considered time commitments, niche expertise, the supply and demand of talent, and average hourly rates.

How to Use This Guide

  1. Find your vertical. Prices vary by vertical and correspond to the level of expertise required to write about a given topic or industry.

  2. Scope your project. Decide on the desired length of the piece and the number of primary and/or secondary sources required. Generally speaking, the more interviews or research required, the higher the fee.

  3. Calculate your rate. Use the recommendations in the table on the page that follows to decide on an appropriate project fee.

  4. Assign your project to the best-fit contributor. Most of the time, Contently’s recommended fees work out just fine. Sometimes, freelancers—especially those in high demand or verticals, or verticals that require specialized skills or expertise, command higher rates.

Before We Get Started

Prices are recommendations. What follows are our recommended fees based on market rates for top-notch writers across industries. That said, no two projects are the same and project fees are flexible and up for negotiation. Your Contently Managing Editor is a project-pricing expert who can advise you and negotiate with contributors on your behalf.

Word counts are recommendations, too. Contently freelancers welcome written projects of any length and your Contently Managing Editor can adjust prices accordingly.  Per-word pricing is provided in the event your project does not fall within recommended word counts.

Margins are not shown. These prices are what freelancers earn. Your final price will be different based on your agreement with Contently. Margins are typically 20%.
